Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan recieved her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Toronto. Further studies took place at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Centre d'Arts Orford, the Steans Institute for Young Artists and at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in Holland. She created the role of Saskia de Vries in the 1999 world premiere production of the opera 'Writing to Vermeer', by composer Louis Andriessen and British filmmaker Peter Greenaway, in the Netherlands. After sold out performances at the Netherlands Opera, the production toured to Australia and New York. She has performed extensively throughout Europe and is engaged to do so through 2003. In 2000 Ms. Hannigan made her Toronto Symphony Orchestra debut in Ligeti's 'Mysteries of the Macabre'.
