Celtic

Three Row Barley draws together experienced members of Vancouver''s folk and celtic scene to create a sound that is rousing yet original. We play covers of many lesser-known songs, along with crowd pleasers from Great Big Sea, Makem and Clancy, Stan Rogers, Pogues and others, and high quality originals. Vocal harmonies are a specialty, as is a sense of humour and enjoyment that is contagious to the crowd.

Roger Buston (formerly of The Quenchers) heads up the group on lead vocals, guitar, and all around energy. Roger has written many high quality originals that are often the highlights of our shows. His energy and charisma are a great draw to the audience.

Bruce Mathisen, out of the George V folk crowd provides great lead and backing vocal and guitar. His knowledge and love of all things folk (and spirits, and golf...) is a great source of fresh material, knowledge and laughter (with some groans as well...)

The rhythm section cooks with the bodhran of Brian Taylor. Also known as The Stealth Tenor, Brian is our answer to David Crosby - always able to pull out a beautiful harmony. His love of British Invasion music lends him that ''rock'' ear for harmony that helps the sound immensely.

The Big Man on bass, Chris Williscroft, is 6''7" and always on the move. He shares Brian's love of British Invasion rock, and his thumping bass lines propel the danceable thythms. Roger was once asked about Chris by a fan: "How does he keep it all up in the air like that?"

Fiddle duties are often held by 'Deadly' Doug Medley, a veteran and natural showman. He keeps busy as well with the Halifax Wharf Rats.

A sense of fun, energy and high vocal quality are primary distinguishers of Three Row Barley from other acoustic celtic bands out there.

The repeat shows at The Atlantic Trap and Gill, Doolin's pub, Jericho Folk Club and various ceilidhs and events around town attest to our popularity, not just with audiences, but with managers as well. We have been trusted with headline status at the BC Highland Games, Canada Place and New Year''s Eve shows.
