Derek Brans
Alternative | Pop | RockIf you have not yet heard the name Derek Brans, you are about to in a big way. Derek''s distinctive lyrics and enigmatic stage presence are earning him a reputation as a charismatic performer. This reputation along with his aloof, yet approachable charm and kooky sense of humour wrapped in poutty, boyish good looks is garnering him a loyal and rapidly growing following of fans. Derek’s music is layered with complex, yet honest lyrics that weave through memorable melodies. If you ever wondered how to say it but just couldn’t find the words, sing them one of Derek’s songs.Brans’ self-titled debut recording is a teaser at 3 songs, but it gives us some insight into this man’s world. His approach to music and the creative process build bridges between a career in pop music and a passion for writing music for theatre, movies and television. As a multi-talented artist, Derek moves easily from guitar to piano when creating music or performing. He is charming, funny and sometimes moody and all of these things assist him in his desire to write thought-provoking lyrics and sometimes haunting melodies greatly influenced by such other artists as Tori Amos, Radiohead and Weezer. Early 2002, Derek wrote, produced and starred in a one-man story-telling musical called “No Feet In The Pie, Please”, which received great reviews from Vancouver audiences. As part of his involvement in the Vancouver music scene, Derek teaches songwriting and lyric writing workshops. For the past year, Derek has hosted an acoustic showcase series called “Sound Around Town”, which has included such talented performers as Michael Friedman, Melanie Dekker and Tim Hughes. Recently, Derek was awarded FACTOR''s coveted Professional Demo Award, giving him funding towards his first recording. In the Spring of 2004, Derek looks forward to the release of his debut full-length recording. “Derek''s ability to capture the essence of celebrating life as well as personal struggle is uncanny. His simplicity in presenting his songs coupled with powerful lyrics and haunting vocal dynamics are sure to command any audience''s attention.” Zeus Ghadban singer-songwriter Website: http://www.derekbrans.com
