Candy Coated Killahz
Not Yet Rated Electronica | Hip-Hop | PopIt''s 2 am. Somewhere downtown, in a dimly-lit apartment, a mixed kid, 20-something, fiddles intuitively with a synth, her curls bopping to a deep, bassy drum line that rattles in her chest. She finds the hook she was looking for, haunting, elusive…and so fly. She presses record to capture the sticky line, and continues the mix… This is LaPaloma Studio, home of Tosha Dash. Her partner in rhyme, Michael "Skitzo" Akinlabi wanders around the room rhyming to himself over the infectious beat. His feet break out in a sideways moonwalk for a moment, then he pens the rhyme. He waits. T flutters over the controls for a minute longer and then… They wait for it, the beat calling – 1, 2, 3 – then they drop the signature line in perfect unison: "I put my backpack on and I hit the ground runnin''/ Watch out… the Candy Coated Killahz is comin''". Though spit in hardly more than a whisper, ya get the feeling it''s not an empty promise. This is the synergy of CCK. Tosha Dash, the German-Jamaican pianist, guitarist, and former solo artist, is the production mastermind of the project, while the Nigerian-born rapper Skitzo brings his raspy signature voice and lyrical savvy to the duo. Tired of the lonely world of solo artism, the two began writing together on a whim in late 2006 after having met at a downtown restaurant. The energy was crazy as they flipped between gritty rhymes, bouncy pop lines, and soulful hooks. The group has since cranked out more than an album''s worth of hits. Though the two have a mean experimental streak, there is a fundamental common denominator to the music of CCK. Maybe it stems from Tosha''s addiction to Chopin nocturnes, or from Skitzo''s crazy talent for graphic novelism, there''s an undeniable and unforgettable vibe that''s as strange and dark as a comic book and just as playful.
