Grindig
Alternative | Blues | Pop | Rock | Ska | Swing | WorldGrindig is an alt-rock guitar-based band from Toronto that is making its way onto the Canadian music scene in good company.Founded by 25-year old songwriter Derek Downham, this 2-guitar, bass, drum and percussion outfit started as a power trio in 1998. Before long they began turning heads and wooing audiences with their original material and interpretations of popular songs. In short order they added second guitarist Jeffrey Low and percussionist Roman Tome“ to flesh out their sound. With the new lineup, the Grindig sound evolved to include such diverse influences as swing, pop, Latin, funk, reggae, ska and the delta blues all wrapped up in hard-hitting and hard to pigeonhole package of high-energy musical talent. The group''s early performances included dates with King Apparatus, Roach Motel and Squirrel Nut Zippers to name a few, as well as having contributed a song to the movie Drowning Mona starring Danny DeVito and Jamie Lee Curtis. In the fall of 2000, the band hooked up with the production management company Sandbox Production House, and by the end of the year, Grindig had put the finishing touches on a body of work, which they would produce as a limited run 10 song CD in the early part of 2001 titled GRINDIG. The release was announced at the launch of their website www.grindig.com and made available exclusively through on line music merchant Maple Music. The summer of 2001 saw the band performing as support act for Big Sugar and The Watchmen, as well as co-billing at the World Festival of Beers, headlining the legendary Wetlands Preserve in New York City and The Tralfalmadour in Buffalo as well as local Toronto shows at such live music landmarks as Ted''s Wrecking Yard, The Rivoli, The Horseshoe Tavern and The Reverb Room to name a few. An NFL tailgate performance in Buffalo helped introduce the band to radio programmers, on-air personalities and sport fanatics alike to great response. Grindig was caught on film performing live before an enthusiastic audience at The Kee to Bala in Muskoka Ontario and has edited this performance into a 9-minute electronic press kit which is posted on their site and provides an honest and at times humorous presentation of the band, its members and the music they make. In 2002, the band wowed a panel of music industry at Canadian Music Week, and winning the Xtreme Bandslam-a nationwide competition for the title of "Best Unsigned canadian band". After the victory, the band played a show at the Air Canada Centre w/ Sloan, David Usher and The Tea Party. Recently, their self titled debut has made it''s way on to store shelves across Canada through shorline/EMI, and their video for "The Best Of You" is in medium rotation on Much Music NOW! Attend a GRINDIG show and feel the energy of the band in a live setting, and you won''t be able to stop your body from moving to the feel good music of GRINDIG.
