Hello! yes I do, for the busking license - go to the main info booth at Granville Island. The easiest way would be to approach a busker there, and ask them where to go, what the routine is etc. You will find that they have specific areas - abit of a "seniority" thing going on... ask then where a great place is, if it is available... where to they suggest you play etc. Some of them have been there for 10 years! Show them respect and they'll show you the ropes! To record a demo - there is a very honest, hard working musician/engineer just off of Main St. who records in his basement. His name is Peter Vogler and his basement is called "Rhythm Recording." His number is 604-252-9590. He has the best prices, does a totally professional job, and CARES about the end product. Ask him if he thinks you need 2 or 3 songs... I think perhaps just 2. The more you practice EXACTLY what you want to record... the cheaper. He is $25 an hour and EASY to work with. This is the guy... he may even hook you up with some gigs and/or ideas! good luck, call Peter when you are ready!

Hi. What is a 'busking license?' and do you know where I can go to record a demo?

Hi Kathrine. wow you're making me think! It's been 2 years since I lived in Van. Here are some suggestions: If you want to play outside - consider Lonsdale Quay, Granville Island, and Vancouver Art Gallery. The Art Gallery on Robson. I know some people who made tons of money at Granville Is. You have to pay $15 to get a "busking license." Cafes are a great idea. Main street is good - like Soma Cafe, Main st. Cafe (this may be adult only), on Main & Broadway is Cafe Montmartre. The Naam Restaurant has lots of jazz....on Commercial drive is Cafe du' Soleil. Kathrine - write out a one page bio of yourself with a picture of you. If you had a 2 or 3 song demo tape or c.d. - that would be great. In the Georgia Strait newspaper look for listings in the poetry section. Lots of these venues are all ages and would love a guest musician. Look also for festivals in the paper and on the net. You could play any festival - Childrens, Folk, Jazz, Classical.... believe it or not - your market is HUGE Kathrine.... where do you like to go? Find where you would like to play and then take them your little demo package. You could also go to the PNE, play where it's FUN Kathrine, that's what it's about.

Thank You for answering me!! And I hope you don't mind if you answer some more of my questions that be great!! Where do you think/know are the best places to "perform" cause I'm sure if I go to cafe and go can I perform here they would probably look at me all weird because I'm kinda young to be performing on the streets already. I was thinking of playing clasical/jazz music do you think that will attract people? Any advice would be great too.

okay Kathrine... but you realize you have 3 questions right? First of all... many people would love to hear you perform simply based on your age. They wouldn't care too much if you were playing cover tunes or originals. I would say - play what you most enjoy. But if it cover tunes... do some research about the history of the band and really read the lyrics. Make sure you agree with the ideas and issues they present. Make sure you respect the lives of the musicians you are covering. Make sure they were not hired by a recording studio and make sure they are true artists worthy of being copied. Find your own voice and sound... then you won't care what anyone else likes. It's what YOU like - that matters - and then DOING it. Follow your heart, your fingers, voice and style (and answers) will follow.

Okay, I have a question. I'm a 12 year old pianist/guitar/singer, and I'm thinking of performing cover songs at cafe or wherever. I was just wondering would you like to hear cover songs performed or would you like to hear original songs. Also can you tell me: 1) where you go to see live music 2)what genre of music you like
