I have not seen these guys and have never heard their music, but I have to say I am extremely curious about any band who generates this much dialogue!

To Ryman - I concur with everything you have said about this band so far. I have played music in this city for over 20 years and I have never seen a band to match the Great Lake Swimmers. There are not words strong enough to describe their pathetic attempt at musicality, and if they are such a great studio band why don't they stay there and spare the rest of us. I have never seen a band upset people so much or so quickly. To the point where I had to stop a female friend, not noted for her violence, from bouncing a lime slice off the singer's forehead. In addition to that, another friend, who I have NEVER heard say anything bad about anyone was actually commenting negatively about the band and their performance. In fact of the 6 people who I was with, all disliked or actively hated the band. Let's see them take this shite out to any bar not populated by their friends and family and we'll see how the general public responds. I know bars where they would have been stomped for daring to call themselves a band or musicians. As for that poor innocent who called elements of the show "spine tingling", do you mean like a dentist's drill is spine tingling?

Yep i'm an asshole, you got me pegged, i'm so wounded.

1) I already announced my asshole nature, dear.

2) The band SUCKS at least as a live band but I suspect they just plain suck due to being totally fucking pretentious and self involved.

3) I said the reason i commented on the pathetically weak drummer's look was because it was so matched by her playing. if they had a fat chunky drummer who had fat chunky playing i might have commented on that look too if it was so matched by the playing. Only a fat chunky drummer with fat chunky playing would be a good thing (because the PLAYING is better when fat and chunky as opposed to weak and anemic), therefore would probably have illicited postivie comments "hey look how that fat chunky drummer has equally fat chunky playing!"

AND let me just say that drummer's look is what you see in all of those women's magazines, so it's not like she is exactly hard done to by society for looking that way. My comments however were about her horrible weak playing, which just happened to match her look.

4) Sweatheart if you are OFFENDED by comments like that i suggest you get out more ... or stay at home since the world at large must constantly offend you.

hmm well i myself have seen/heard Great Lake Swimmers, and i will have to disagree with those who do not enjoy the music. i suppose it comes right down to personal choice, because i found the performance to be very profound. i thought Tony's songwriting skills to be superb, with all of his elegant wordiness and spinetingling guitar arrangements. the emotion behind the music really impressed me, and i was more than pleased with the overall show. while you others may have thought them to be "shoegazers", i must say that i do not share that opinion. and i must also say that i was very offended and unimpressed about the comment of the "anemic anorexic drummer". it is one thing to criticise constructively and make a comment about her musical abilities, but you, sir, are an asshole. although im sure you hear that all the time.

Hey micfinn, you're a lot nicer than I'd be. Admittedly I can be an asshole but it's just because pretentious bullshit pisses me off and I don't care enough to be nice about it. And sorry jdekker, but only the guy's brother would call that shit GREAT. GREAT musicians can pull it off live as well as in a studio. A lot of people can sound good on CD, and if that's the only place these guys can sound good, then just be a studio project and don't waste people's time in a live situation. Like I said I ended up not caring how they might be on CD, sure the guy MAY write some good songs, my point was don't fucking wank in front of a live audience. If you are going play live learn how to do it, give something to the audience who spent their time being there or fuck off! I also heard comments around me too, so it was'nt the only bad review I heard.

I saw a couple of bands the night before and actually another one just before the Swimmers who were the complete opposite, man they put out for their audience, and it was great. I mean a band like Moneen got tons of buzz and while they weren't as good as I expected, they still kicked ass and put out for the audience. Then I see a band like the Great Lake Swimmers and I was actually ANGRY at how my time was being wasted. my point about the drummer was, I am more inclined to cut any chick in a band more slack than I would a guy, especially on drums where you rarely see chicks play, but this chick was so laughable on the drums it was like watching a MAD TV skit. the only reason I commented on her look was because it was so unbelievably matched by her anorexic and anemic playing.

Tony Dekker writes some really nice, heartfelt and sadly-sweet songs. And there are some really good players in the band -- Nick Zubeck, for intstance is fantastic on bass among other instruments. But, as a band, on stage, they have some work to do. They are a bunch of non-interacive shoe gazers. And, regardless of the drummer's gender, the drumming is weak and distracting. Whose fault that is, I don't know. But I went there with fresh ears, open mind and positive expectations, and I was let down.

Okay, Tony Dekker is my brother, however this has nothing to do with the comment I am about to post. First of all, ryan, or whatever your name is, you have to learn the difference between knowing great music when you hear it, and personal preference. It's fine if you are not interested in the music, however don't start tearing it apart because of it. If you truly were a good critic of music, you would realize the talent that this band has. Can you honestly say that you have seen Tony play enough to judge and critic his music? I think not, because you yourself said you walked out. Next time you post a message like that why don't you put some brains behind it, because this is the first bad review I have heard about his band, and your opinion is just an opinion and counts for shit. And about 'that chick' in the band: i never knew that a musician had to be a perfect weight and size to satisfy you. And FYI she is not a girlfriend of a member in the band.

m_sorge is obviously not someone who knows how to post correctly, or else you just like to repeat your lame ass comments.

I know plenty about music and I know a lame fucking band when I see one. To claim I obviously know nothing about music because I think this band blows chunks is totally in keeping with how completely fucking pretentious and self involved this band is. Like I said I don't know how they are on CD, but juging from their show I was too angry and bored to give a fuck about how their CD might be. We fucking WALKED OUT it was so bad. I don't think I have seen a more pretentious group of shoe gazers, who couldn't even give the audience the courtesy of LOOKING at them, since, I don't know when.

AND normally, I am a big fan of chicks in any band, but that anemic anorexic they had on the drums was laughable! She must be someone's girlfriend since she sure didn't get there on ability.

And both the lead singer and lead guitar player could not possibly have been LESS entertaining. I'm surprised those dudes didn't get their asses kicked after the show by angry audience members! If I had actually forked out cash for that show believe me I would have kicked someone's ass if they didn't give me my money back.

tony dekker has been a close personal friend of mine now for many many years. let it be known that this is no reflection of that... tony dekker (a.k.a. great lake swimmers) is incredible. playing in previous bands with dekker, i can say, without a doubt, that this new saga from tony is by far the best and most original. buy the c.d., you will not regret the purchase... quote me, "you will buy a copy for everyone dear to you".
