Bosstones Deliver Mighty, Mighty Performance At The Commodore
Vancouver
September 26, 2000
Mighty Mighty Bosstones @ The Commodore
The Bosstones, with The Gadgits and North Vancouver's Crowned King, delivered a flawless show at the Commodore Ballroom - one that served as a testament to their enduring popularity. Not content to be distant celebrities, these boys created a party even the burliest bouncer couldn't stop.
The security guards at the Commodore Ballroom have become something of a legend in Vancouver. Doorman Tony Seaver received an astonishing assault for 8 weeks straight in the Westender's letters section, wherein he was described by concert-goers as everything from a out-of-control-bully' to a big pussycat who was just doing his job. Regardless of public opinion, the security staff and the Ballroom do, in fact, run a decidedly tight ship, which made the Mighty Mighty Bosstones show on Wednesday night a surprising treat.
The Bosstones, who have been performing their tight, energetic brand of ska-punk for 10 years, were halfway through their set when a scuffle took place near the front of the crowd. Seems an over enthusiastic fan had crowd-surfed his way over the barrier and made a break for the stage. Quickly harangued by the oversized bouncers, the fan looked as though he would be enjoying the show from outside the venue's confines. That is, until fate, and Dicky Barrett, the Bosstones' toad-voiced front man intervened.
Bring me that kid croaked Barrett, clearly irate at having to stop mid song. Bring me the f#*-in kid. now. The capacity crowd waited in anticipation as the terrified fan was brought to face the 8-strong band. The impeccably suited front man looked him up and down and then: I don't know how you treat that kind of behavior here in Vancouver but here in the Bosstones... we reward it. You just won yourself free beer backstage.
And that was it, the one moment that turned a good show into an excellent one, turning a fans unpleasant experience into a unforgettable memory. One by one, audience members trickled on to the stage, skanking up a storm with Dicky, dancer and the band, with the only out-control moment coming from a young exhibitionist intent on removing her top.
