Don't miss The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredricton on September 14 th

September 14, 2010
Every September something special happens in Fredericton, New
Brunswick. I'm talking about the Harvest Jazz and Blues festival. For
six days the downtown core becomes a sea of music with eleven stages,
including four massive tents and several closed streets. And those are
just the official venues. The festival also organizes street
performances, and all through the week performers can be found
practicing their craft in bars and pubs all over the city. There is
something for everyone, with styles ranging from soft acoustic blues,
funk, hard and gritty electric blues to flat out rock. Walking through
the festival can be like a history lesson in the formation of modern
music.
The festival began nineteen years ago. Initially a showcase for the
rich east coast music scene, the festival has grown aggressively every
year. It now attracts performers from around the world, including
personalities who have had a large influence on the development of
blues and rock. It is not unusual now to see names such as Gov't Mule,
Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy or BB King. This year promises to be as
exciting as ever. Highlights of the 2010 lineup include Big Sam's
Funky Nation, Derek Trucks, Big Sugar and The Trews. I also have to
plug up and coming local favorites Ross Neilsen & The Sufferin'
Bastards, who competed in the 2010 International Blues Challenge in
Memphis, and CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award winner Keith Hallet.
