Last weekend at Malkin Bowl in picturesque Stanley Park, indie popsters Vampire Weekend from NYC put on quite the show at Malkin Bowl / Vancouver.
First and foremost this band has come a long way , since I saw them a few years back. Vampire Weekend as a collective have become much more comfortable on stage.
Vampire Weekend came out of the gate with lots off press and hype. They were far from ready to rock our world , but the lads gave it a good kick. Now that the dust has settled and the band has discovered some roots as well as honing their musical abilities and songwriting. VW are on the rise. The setting at Malkin Bowl was perfect , a sun-drenched stage , breaking on dusk , the piney smells of the forest floor and the irrepressible smell of Vancouver's finest weed in the air, I re-iterate. a perfect night!.
Drummer Christopher Tomson, was on fire, from the get go he was ready to rock.Vampire Weekend's core sound comes from his confidence and technical ability as well as his meter and groove. Thomson doesn't get stuck in those comfort grooves like The Hip or Nickelback , he inventively uses world beat rhythms and tempos mixing it up keeping it bright .
The bands fresh approach to 'Contra' works. They
have dressed up their pop songs , so they don't come off as overdone or too slick. The lyrics sometimes confuse me , but the melody and tempo quickly take over. I liked what I saw. Vampire Weekend will be back and I am looking forward to hearing what 's next.
They will be playing Toronto on September 7 th at The Molson Amphitheater and Montreal at The Metropolis Theater on September 8 th.
