54-40 @ The Commodore
October 11, 2000
Unquestionably 54-40's gig last Wednesday night at The Commodore was one of the best I've seen the band perform. This local line up has been around for well over a decade, never really achieving the popularity that they deserve. Well, last night's performance was indeed a milestone.
As I see it, in the past 54-40 have struggled along writing and recording whatever pleased them, and not paying too much attention to what the labels might deem to be mainstream / pop (whatever). An integral approach not to mention self assured. From the get go, it was clear that 54-40 had the songs. Why it took this long for them to really be acknowledged is beyond me, with songs like One Gun and their latest release Casual Viewin' which seem to be almost inevitable Classics. (ah!, The Smilin' Buddha Days...)
Now, their latest release, Casual Viewin' has certainly made its way onto the airwaves with crucial rotation. Rightfully so, the recording is flawless and the songs have a booty of hook and melody, and of course that fat lactating rhythm that 54-40 have standing behind each song like a sentry. Groove, hook, melody, drive, quality musicianship and unassuming demeanor. Wow...real music, real people.
Wednesday night they had the audience singing not just along with them, but taking the lead as the band sat back and watched. Even from my vantage point it was wonderful to see the number of people who knew the lyrics and melody. Quite something to see almost 1,000 people swaying and singing I've got an ocean pearl, well, we do ... 54-40.
