Matt Good Band Deliver Polished, But Empty Set

Matt Good Band @ The Commodore
12/27/00
Matt was in fine form this past Wednesday night (not as petulant as on prior outings) and he and his band mates played a strong set for the first of 7 sold out shows at The Commodore.
They kicked off the evening with "Giant" and by the time they started into "Hello Time Bomb" the audience was alight.
The show, in support of their latest CD "Beautiful Midnight", proved that this Vancouver band has now reached well beyond their hard core local following and are indeed on their merry way to success.
The guitar and bass interplay was admirable, a fat tantalizing sound, gripping guitars (Dave) and fretful bass lines (Rich). Very sweet. The drums remain without doubt the backbone of the lineup with precise, well structured dynamics and finesse.
However, I get the impression the lads are bored, not really challenged, just playing what's in front of them and thinking of something else. Kinda like drivin'" your pals home after a night on the town. They’re under the influence and riding on autopilot.
MGB songs have all the elements, lots of hook, melody, rhythm and structure. Regardless, I always walk away from the gigs with a hollow feeling. The lyrics drag me into a downward spiral, vortexed into a very dark space, leaving me empty, cold and damp... like a piece of spent jet trash.
