PREVIEW - DOA Bloodied But Unbowed And Returning Tonight!
Vancouver
March 28, 2001
DOA in Hardcore 2001 @ Richard's On Richards
March 29th, 2001
As Hardcore 2001 approaches (OK, it's tonight!) it seems like a simple preview for DOA, Vancouver's most enduring band, is not enough.
DOA has always been the kind of band that makes things happen and I'm glad they've taken it upon themselves to organize an anniversary of Hardcore'81. After all, remember their motto: talk minus action equals zero.
Well, Joe Keithly, the self proclaimed trouble maker, has been in on the action, both musically and politically, for over twenty tears now. He has never let other people's short sightedness and indecision get in his way. His songs have never been given a chance on the radio - so what does Keithly do? He takes over the radio. From 10 til midnight on mycityradio.com he can be heard going off about hockey, punk rock, politics or whatever he feels like on The Joe Show.
Thursday night's show at Richards will undoubtedly have something to do with nostalgia. But, just because aging punkers try to squeeze into their studded DOA vests to re-live their youth doesn't mean this is a Vegas style retrospective. No, you should expect crunching punk anthems delivered at an ear bleeding volume. That sounds good enough already, but once you throw original member Randy Rampage back into the mix, things will get really f*cked up.
If Joe Keithly (or, Joey Shithead, as he'll forever be in my heart) is the brains and brawn behind DOA, Rampage is the embodiment of everything that was punk rock. His stage presence has been unmatched by the scores of capable replacements Keithly has found. Although I didn't really become a convert until War on 45 when the line up included Dave Gregg, Wimpy Roy, and Dimwit, I was always aware of the legacy Rampage left behind.
I can remember one of his guest appearances with the band at The New York Theatre in about 1984. When Rampage took the stage to sing on one song, the crowd went from wild to out of control. Between stage divers, slam dancers, and the morons who still stood at the side of the stage and tried to spit on the band, the old theatre was about one more decibel away from collapsing on itself. To say Rampage's return to the lineup is welcome is an understatement at best.
Still, though, this is Keithly's band, and he will be the one front and centre on Thursday night. His continued presence on the Vancouver music scene keeps my faith alive. When Keithly decides to do something nothing can hold him back. He carved a career out of the music industry by going against the grain and never backing down.
Now it's time for us to salute the man, and the band, that had the balls to not only proclaim that Something Better Change, but has also spent over twenty years doing something about it. Don't miss DOA at Richards on Thursday March 29th.
