Pope Black - Citygigs Report From East Berlin.

Every once in a while you go to a show because you think it might be "interesting". This gut feeling turned into truly unforgettable experience Friday night in a cavernous little bar in the heart of East Berlin. Sponsored by the Church of the Subgenious (http://www.subgenius.com), the place was covered in the ever happy grin of their god JR 'Bob' Dobs or simply, Bob and the line-up was as far east of normal as you can get.
The night's service was lead by Pope David Lee Black. An American, legend has it that he's been banned from the USA, exiled for his radical views. Maybe he was too drunk or not drunk enough yet but his preachings fell kind of flat. What more can be said of how much an idiot George Bush is. His impromptu wedding between "a man and a woman, a man and a man, two women, The Church of Subgenious doesn't care!" was rather touching. I think the two men will be a happy couple once they find out each other's names. Oh and I have to agree with his belief that Robbie Williams is part of "the conspiracy".
The first musical performance of the night was Leah Molina or as she's calling herself on this tour, Vagina Jones. Armed with an accordion and various musical toys and megaphones, she delivered a solid string of clever songs with decent hooks. "It is heaven when I am jealous of you. It is heaven when you're jealous too." If she wasn't wearing a triple strap on ... something, she might have a hit with this song.
The next freak (and I use the word freak in it's curliest haired sense) was Boulder Colorado resident Little Fyodor. "Any humans here?" he asks and you believe he might have a hard time telling us apart. The rock and roll equivalent of seeing a chicken with it's head cut off. Schizophrenia for your enjoyment. "I want an ugly girl, who'd want nobody but me", "All my clothes are uncomfortable", "Nobody wants to play with me", "You make me horny" ("to all those fine young German lasses"). Frank Zappa if he had never gotten laid. Brilliant. You thought Thom Yorke and Gord Downie made funny facial expressions...
 Up next, The Duke of Uke. Take the Sex Pistols, remove guitar, bass, drums, and screaming vocals, add a ukelele and a soothing voice and you have The Duke of Uke. Hillariously bland renditions of "Anarchy in The UK", "I Wanna Be Sedated", "Autobhan", "Holliday in Cambidia", a doors medley and a truly remarkable "Communication Breakdown".
The rest of the evening was a relative letdown following Little Fyodor's exhibition and The Duke's lush performance. Astral Terror Attack delivered some solid covers (Hendrix, Queens of the Stone
Age, Butthole Surfers, Willie deVille, Jonathon Richmond, ...) that the crowd really got into. Pope Black continued making disciples of non believers, blessing them with beer. "Do you believe!?". Yes Pope, I believe.
