Hawksley Workman - (last night we were) the delicious wolves
By Craig Pinhey
Release Date: March 6, 2001
How did I miss this guy's first record "For Him and the Girls"? It doesn't
matter--I have it now! Hawksley Workman is the freshest talent I have
heard in 2001. He performs practically every note on his record, writes all
of the songs and produced the damn thing too. And what a record! Next thing
you'll tell me he made the video for his "Jealous of Your Cigarette" too (my
vote for best video of the year).
Workman's sound is difficult to pinpoint, but it lies somewhere between
Glam Bowie and Rufus Wainwright's more 'showtuney' songs, with some punk/new
wave thrown in the mix. Not to say that Workman was influenced by Rufus. He
surely wasn't, but there is something definitive about songs like "What A
Woman", "Old Bloody Orange" and "You, Me and the Weather". This neo-Cabaret
sound perfectly captures the collection of music I liked in the
last century--encapsulates it and allows me to look forward to music in the
next millennium. It's not just the ballads--I'm also impressed by the
slick rockers, including "Jealous..", "Striptease", and "Clever, Not
Beautiful", which verges into classic Queen territory. He can do Glam, for
sure, but he's no Gary Glitter. Hawksley will make many more great records,
I'm sure, and I suspect he will experiment musically.
I love his expressive voice, and the guitar musicianship on the record makes
Hawksley #2 on my "Must See in 2002" list (right after Elvis C).
This is truly alternative music, steps above the hoards of same-sounding,
gravelly-voiced, 70's clone-bands populating our so-called alternative
airwaves today.
Buy It. Love It. See Him. Love him.
