Nicholls - an Outkast among The Vines

The Vines started their sophomore tour Tuesday night at the Commodore Ballroom but the show, rumored to be a certain sell-out, seemed anything but.

For those in attendance however it was a night well worth the reasonable $28.75 price of admission.

The Vines took the stage at 9:50 amidst bright red floods, flashing strobes and thick drifting fog that sent the crowd into an uproar. Blasting their way through a roller coaster set consisting mainly of tracks from their debut disc "Highly Evolved" the angst ridden Craig Nicholls lasted about three songs before the destruction started.

Nicholls a "highly intense" performer with a petulant perimeter tossed his guitar in the air (often dropping it), smashed mic stands, punched out amp cones, and ultimately went to battle with the drum kit all the while creating a room full of unintentional feedback that had me a little confused, but mostly amused.

Musically speaking, besides an explosive "Get Free" the highlight for me was a version of Outkast's "Ms. Jackson" that was way out of place and out of Nicholls character as his singing went from a scream to something more legible.

There was nothing stand-outish of what I'm assuming is new material from their forthcoming album which strengthens my argument that they should never have been booked into the Commodore nor do I see them lasting much past a sophomore release.

Nicholls while clearly enjoying trashing the beautiful guitars he now has in his possession should not forget the humbling days of serving up fries at McDonalds, not that he'll ever need to sport the polyester uniform again, he still bears a head of the coolest chunky hair in rock-n-roll, let's hope for his sake he keeps it.
