Supersuckers, Mon March 31st, Commodore Ballroom

Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers might be the only man in rock and roll who can wear a cowboy hat onstage and not come off like a pretentious rock poseur. The reason isn't because they've actually released a country record. Or because his band was honored with a gig backing Willie Nelson on the Tonight Show; it's because beneath the coal black cowboy hat stands a man with enough whiskey stain on his voice and experience on the road to make you believe: If ever there was a "Rock'n'roll Cowboy", he's it.

Since the band's 1992 debut, the Tuscan Arizona band has blended rock attitude and samples of country blues to create drinking/drug anthems fit for disenchanted rock fans around the globe. Their latest release, the brazenly titled "Motherfuckers Be Trippin'" is set for release this April 22nd and in support, the suckers brought their act to the Commodore Ballroom opening for Side One Dummy Record's Flogging Molly.

Any fan concerned that over a decade of touring and recent familial additions would have toned down the quartet can rest assured that their new release and live show are set to be as raucous as ever. Song titles like "Someday I will Kill You" and "A Goodnight for my Drinking" should be enough of a tip off that the Supersuckers don't aim to change their ideologies any time soon.

As far as the show went, it's only too apparent that the years of playing and drinking together has turned the Supersuckers into one of the most entertaining live acts to catch on tour. Spaghetti balanced a charming connection with the audience over top of a continuous stream of amped up classics and newer material. Standing between the twin guitar assault of Ron Heathman and "Thunder" Bolton, Spaghetti sung with a guttural howl that could make you afraid to wonder how many pints had passed through him.

After over a dozen shots of their two and a half minute blasts of musical irreverence, the frontline was joined by drummer Dancing Eagle for an onstage bow to their adoring cult following. Over a decade of releasing Ramones and Johnny Cash influenced punk hasn't bought the Supersuckers great fame or wealth but it's given them the right to wear their sideburns long and their hair longer and, most of all, the chance to play the music they love for far longer then they may have thought possible.
