Kris Kristofferson - Broken Freedom Song: Live From San Francisco

By David McPherson

Release Date: July 8, 2003

Film star, songwriter, Rhodes scholar, and poet: all these descriptions come to mind when one thinks of Nashville legend Kris Kristofferson.

Broken Freedom Song - recorded live at the Gershwin Theatre at San Francisco State University July 19, 2002 - is an intimate performance by Kristofferson that shows how the master storyteller still captivates his audience. And, approaching his seventieth year, the Renaissance man’s words still ring true with a new generation of listeners.

Each song on Broken Freedom Song tells a story that exudes a piece of the songwriter’s spirit and captivates the listener’s heart. Kristofferson’s harmonica and guitar guide these 15 classic tales penned over a span of more than 30 years. Songs tell tales of the times and places that have marked the artist’s creative journey.

“Shipwrecked in the 80’s” describes the storied songwriter’s ups and downs and the unexpected times of loneliness and despair. “The Circle” is a timely reflection on power, politics, and the tragedies of war. The song opens with Kristofferson retelling the story of an Iraqi artist who was killed by a bomb President Clinton’s government had targeted at Saddam Hussein. These stirring lines: “Lonesome remains of the madness and pain / in a world gone insane in a war …” capture Kristofferson’s critique of the tragedies wrought by the United States’ ever-expanding war machine.

Broken Freedom Song is just another successful story in Kris Kristofferson’s musical book – an album brimming with honest, well-written songs.

Broken Freedom Song: Live From San Francisco is out now on Oh Boy Records.
