Jesse Cook - Nomad
Release Date: September 2, 2003
Two years in the making, Canadian Jesse Cook returns with his fifth album Nomad - a collection of 12 songs that shows the accomplished Flamenco guitarist exploring new musical directions.
Nomad is Cook’s first album to feature vocals on half the tracks. Cook led a gypsy life during the creation of the album, which was recorded in Cairo, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, and Toronto.
Cook’s distinct guitar playing shines once again, but what makes Nomad Cook’s best album to date are the cast of guest contributors he assembled from around the world. Afrocelts joined the musical party for a few tracks, and Flora Purim, the Brazilian Latin-jazz great, contributes her silky vocals to “Maybe.”
Other guest vocals include The BoDeans’ founders (Sam Llanas and Kurt Neumann) on “Early on Tuesday,” and Danny Wilde (ex-Rembrandts), on “Down Like Rain.”
The tracks recorded in Egypt add an Arabic influence to the disc especially the opener, “Qadukka-Mayyas.” This traditional song features vocals by Maryem Tollar who is backed by an Egyptian string ensemble. Originally written in the Andalusian style of southern Spain, the song succeeds reworked with Cook’s flamenco flavouring.
Combining elements of African and world music with flamenco, Cook creates a unique smorgasbord of musical styles that should appeal to most palates. His comforting music calms at times and excites at others, providing the perfect background soundtrack for any occasion.
Nomad is available on Virgin Music Canada.
