The Constantines - Shine A Light
By David McPherson
Release Date: September 9, 2003
After four years, and a move from Guelph to the big smoke, the Constantines are starting to find its groove. Currently the darlings of college radio, Hogtown’s adopted punk-rock sons, the Constantines have turned many a critique’s head in the last year, and for good reason.
On its sophomore release - Shine a Light - the Constantines score high marks for originality. The dozen songs are marked by abruptness - time signatures change abruptly, and songs, especially the title cut, reach a deafening crescendo, and then end without giving a sense of closure.
Experimental, grungy power chords and a fuzzy horn section are creatively combined with Bryan Webb’s guttural voice to create an awesome listening experience. A pounding and hypnotic bass in the background adds to the band’s heavy sound. This technique is especially prevalent on “Goodbye Baby & Amen.”
Combining a little Clash, with its own punk panache, the Constantines create an atmospheric sound that would make Phil Spector proud. Guests include the Uptown Horns, featuring the SkyDiggers’ Andy Maize.
In a musical landscape that’s crying for some originality, this five-piece power-punk outfit offers a fresh and unforgettable helping of musical mayhem.
Shine A Light is out now on Three Gut Record.
