Andrew Walker - Floating Shift
Release Date: November 20, 2003
Andrew Walker — the former frontman for roots-rock artists the Mummbleducks —offers fans of alt-country and folk-rock music Floating Shift – the Toronto singer/songwriter’s first solo disc.
Floating Shift is a charming collection of 10 well-written, original songs by a gifted songwriter. For his solo debut, Walker assembled an impressive line-up of contributors that includes bass player Tim Drummond, who has recorded and played with Neil Young among others. Canadian musicians who also lent their talents include guitarist Colin Cripps (Junkhouse, Oh Susanna), and pedal steel player Kim Deschamps (Cowboy Junkies, Blue Rodeo).
The album opens with the catchy “Charity.” – a song listeners will find themselves singing along to after only a few listens.
One of the best tracks is “Old 81.” This coming of age story in small-town Ontario has a Gordon Lightfoot feel; it’s a true Canadiana tale of growing up, reflecting on life, and thinking how the Old 81 train was part of Walker’s formative years. In a hushed tone, Walker whispers, “when I was young, I engineered the Old 81 … and now she haunts my dreams.”
“Seven Years,” is a soporific ballad that is perfectly propelled by Walker’s murmur; minimalist musical accompaniment is provided by vox, piano, and cello. “Finesse” is another of the disc’s many harmonious highlights.
The mellow, “My Heart Wanders” closes the album with Walker giving his final statement alone on vox and acoustic guitar.
Give Floating Shift a spin, and you’re sure to discover another of this country’s hidden songsmiths.
Floating Shift is now available on Heise Hill Records.
