Ian Tyson - Ol' Eon
By David McPherson
Release Date: October 14, 2003
Ol' Eon is the first solo album of the Canadian country and folk legend known as Ian Tyson. First recorded 30 years ago for A&M records, Canadian label Stony Plain recently reissued Tyson's groundbreaking solo debut for a new generation to fall in love with. This reissue features an informative essay by Toronto-based publicist Richard Flohil that captures why Tyson's music exudes a timeless quality.
Ol' Eon was the name Tyson's band gave their Stetson-wearing leader. A member of both the Juno and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, Tyson is a tireless performer who still loves to play live. This passion is seen throughout the dozen songs on this landmark Canadian recording.
The album opens with "Some Kind of Fool" - the signature song on the weekly country music program Tyson hosted for CTV in the '70s. Sylvia Tyson - Ian's one-time collaborator and duet partner provides her silky backing vocals throughout. Tyson is also backed by some of Gordon Lightfoot's long-time players: lead guitarist Red Shea and Steel guitarist Pee Wee Charles.
Tyson, like Lightfoot, liked to celebrate Canada through his songs: its virtues, its people, and its places. The best of these travelogues is present here: "Great Canadian Tour," - a song that chronicles the events on the Festival Express, a cross- Canada tour on which Ian and Sylvia had shared the stage with the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy and The Band, among others. Other highlights include "Spanish Johnny" and "The North Saskatchewan."
Overall, Ol' Eon is a testament to a Canadian country legend. And, Tyson's music continues to inspire and influence a new generation of Canadian folk and country musicians.
Ol' Eon is out now on Stony Plain Records.
