Shaye - The Bridge
By David McPherson
Release Date: November 3, 2003
Put together three of the East Coast's most successful female songwriters, and you get a vocal tour de force. Shaye features the diverse sounds of Newfoundlands' Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle and Prince Edward Island's Tara MacLean.
The band's moniker derived from Tara's sister Shaye, who died tragically before the album was finished. Guests include the Tragically Hips' Gord Sinclair and the Tea Party's Jeff Burrows. Six of the 12 tracks were co-written by the threesome with the other half dozen songs hand picked by the band.
The first single, "Happy Baby," is a happy-go-lucky song about finding happiness in whatever you do. It's a little clichéd, but lyrical advice like, "Too many people searching so hard./ But they never look right in their backyard" is a simple credo that more people today could abide by.
"How the West Was Won," is one of the most memorable songs - a country-folk ballad that pokes fun at the frontier spirit that features haunting harmonies.
Overall, The Bridge evokes the island spirits of these three songsters' shared experiences and is a literal bridge to a shared understanding of life's highs and lows.
The Bridge is out now on EMI.
