Great Lake Swimmers
By David McPherson
Release Date: March 28, 2003
Moody dark and hypnotic, the Great Lake Swimmers full-length debut is a bare bones alt-country acoustic album that meanders from the melancholic to the morose.
Recorded over several months in an abandoned grain silo in Southern Ontario, this rural locale lends to the simple and evocative sound that the songs emit. After repeated listens, the tangled textures of the Great Lake Swimmers rise to the surface. The ambient sounds created by the echo of the empty silo adds to the ghostly atmosphere.
Songs are skillfully written and delivered by Toronto singer-songwriter Tony Dekker, whose deep voice bellows up from the belly of his soul to offer 10 songs from the heart. Accordion, piano, and lap steel accompany Dekker. Song titles such as "moving pictures, silent films," "faithful night, listening," and "merge, a vessel, a harbour" resemble free-flowing poems with their reference to a time and place that awakens in the listener a desire to learn more.
Lyrics delivered in a tone just above a whisper, accompanied by acoustic guitar beckon you to listen to Dekker's rootless spirit. Catch a ride with the Great Lake Swimmers and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Great Lake Swimmers is out now on Weewerk.
