Matthew Barber - The Story Of Your Life
By David McPherson
Release Date: February 17, 2004
The six-song EP is Barber's major-label coming out party - a follow up to his critically acclaimed 2002 independent debut Means & Ends.
The southpaw guitarist offers entrancing melodies that are equal parts classic rock and power pop. The Story of Your Life shows the evolution of Barber's sound from folksy, acoustic driven roots-rock to electrically charged tunes that echo the rawness of Crazy-Horse; "We're Gonna Play" is the best example of this new, harder-edged sound. The title track, "The Story of Your Life" features Eagles-like harmonies, and showcases Barber's more mellow side.
The theme of relationships is played out throughout The Story of Your Life; from the common theme of boy meets girl, boy tries to keep girl ("Little Love") to Barber's frustrations with new technology ("Landline"), Barber demonstrates a flair for taking a common theme and through his choice of words and imagery giving it an uncommon treatment.
The reggae and jazz-soaked "Tilt-A-Whirl" takes the listener on yet another musical ride, showing Barber's breadth of influences and ease with experimentation.
Clocking in at less than 24 minutes, the only complaint with Story of Your Life is that the story is too short; it's unfortunately just a musical snack that hints at Barber's rising talent.
The Story Of Your Life is available now on MapleMusic.com.
