Awesome!
Great Big Sea - Something Beautiful

By David McPherson

Release Date: April 6, 2004

Great Big Sea has a reputation as fun-loving Newfoundlanders that make the Rock proud with their high-octane performances and their respect for old musical traditions. Accordingly, fans have come to expect something beautiful from these lads with each recording.

Unfortunately, Something Beautiful does not meet the musical bar set by their earlier recordings. There are more ballads than barn stomping reels. Lacking are danceable favourites from their back catalogue like "Merri Mac," and "Paddy Murphy." The only two songs that come close are "When I am King," and "Helmethead." The latter is classic Great Big Sea with the full complement of the Celtic instrumentation and the unbridled enthusiasm that is the trio's trademark.

The departure of original bassist Darrell Power (who left the band in 2003 to raise his family) is evident on Something Beautiful as it lacks the camaraderie that marked previous Great Big Sea releases.

Overall, the majority of the songs sound tired and uninspired with the trio mellowing out a little too much. Borrowing a line from the title of the opener, the songs "shine right through [you]."

Something Beautiful is out now on Warner Music.
