Ben Kweller - On My Way
By Lesley Browne
Release Date: April 6, 2004
The album, recorded in just three short weeks, captures quite a unique and fulfilling sound. Immediately recognizing the Beatles influence, Ben's singing style is not unlike Weezer's Rivers Cuomo. I'm fairly new to the BK world and must say that I've been enjoying every minute of it. Ben Kweller hand holds the listener through the album and his stories.
Ben Kweller, Josh Lattanzi (bass), Mike Stroud (guitar), Fred Eltringham (drums) and later John Kent (drums) have done an applaudable job translating a timeless musical sound into their own depiction of the world. The album displays a multi-faceted group. The song "Hospital Bed", while bringing thoughts of the Beatles to the surface, also inevitably calls Weezer to mind. Complemented with title track "On My Way" that has a very 'sit around the fire' folk feeling.
Okay, okay, despite my initial urges to over compare Ben Kweller's songs to artists past and present, the album definitely allows you to move passed similarities and hear Ben Kweller's style. BK has proved himself quite the storyteller! He has captured that 'thing' lyricists strive for - when they can say it better than you can. Songs like "The Rules" and "Living Life" encourage you to close your eyes and dream of sitting in a dimly lit bar, tapping along with your foot.
Despite, what has now become obvious to me, a personal interest in the recording, On My Way was masterfully brought together. The band recorded this album with a minimalist post-production approach, undeniably showcasing talent and heart, all with a few good tales in between. At risk of sounding tacky, Ben Kweller could very possibly be on his way.
On My Way is out now on Ato Records.
