Taj Mahal Casts A Spell Over The Commodore

Legendary East coast bluesman, Taj Mahal lit the flames under a cauldron of soulful R&B this past week the Commodore and kept it on simmer for a solid two hour set.

Local blues veteran , Mike Shaw opened the well balanced show with a Stevie Ray tone, approach and delivery. Oh and yes, he had the hat.

But it was Taj that people were out to see and he set the tone early with flavorful and tenacious tempos that hit a harmonic with the crowd from the word go. Strutting onto the stage, clad in a bright floral shirt and an old Panama style straw hat, Taj Mahal worked his way through his set and the crowd.

Alternating between guitar, harmonica, and various percussion instruments, coupled with his husky vocals this 60 year old proved he can move - and that he did. His band ‘The Phantom Blues Band’ were impressive and rounded out the performance with a fine horn section. Driving through the soundscapes at full tilt, non stop all night long amidst a Caribbean breeze.
