Patterson Hood - Killers and Stars
By David McPherson
All Cities
Release Date: May 4, 2004
Having faced personal and professional demons, following the recording of the Drive-By-Truckers' Southern Rock Opera, the band's lead singer, Patterson Hood, recorded Killers and Stars in his kitchen in early 2001. The album was never intended for release - it was Hood's way of healing. But, after a few copies were burned and sold at shows, it became an underground collectible, so New West Records made it "officially" available in 2004.
And, bless them for releasing this record. Hood's honesty and heartache is laid bare on the album's dozen tracks. Unlike the raw energy and southern-fried rock and roll of the Drive-By Trucker's music, Hood's solo effort is music to mellow your mind.
Patterson's guttural vocals relate a dozen tortured tales of love, loss, and lingering pain on this bare bones, spooky acoustic set. The disc opens with the anti-capitalist song "Uncle Disney." This is Hood's own state-of-the-union address; he cleverly and hauntingly croons: "When they thaw out Uncle Disney/ boy won't he be surprised/ Carton cures for all our cancers/ Thunderclouds in the Florida skies."
He later clearly captures a communication breakdown, with his trademark sense of humor, in "Belinda Carlisle Diet" when he sings that: "Everything is so elusive/ Why you acting so exclusive."
Another highlight is Hood's cover of Tom T. Hall's "Pay No Attention to Alice," a sad story about an alcoholic.
Hood acknowledges in the liner notes that "the demons that inspired these songs have long since been laid to rest ..." that's irrelevant since Killers & Stars stands as a timeless reflection of a painful period in a talented artists life.
Killers and Stars is out now on New West Records.
