Jen Chapin - Linger
By David McPherson
Release Date: February 24, 2004
You can just picture Harry Chapin singing "Cat's in the Cradle" to a young Jen as she slept, and how she must have inherited her dad's songwriting gift by osmosis.
Linger — the debut full-length album from the daughter of the legendary folk singer-songwriter and master storyteller — showcases a folk-pop sensibility that strays more towards a jazz influence than the classic folk that her father favored.
Right from the outset, Chapin's lingering lyrics are evident, such as these poetic opening lines to the title track: "I like to linger in the closing of eyes/ before I snatch up the prize of sweet slumber/ I like to linger in the cool of the grass/ when I fall on my ass in the dew."
Living in New York, the hustle and bustle of the crazy city provides ample inspiration for Chapin's muse. In a soft whisper that beckons you to listen, Chapin cajoles you to come along on her musical ride that's filled with romantic reminiscences, big-city reflections, and engaging sidewalk stories. One of the best songs is "Passive People." The chorus chronicles Chapin's view of the human condition: "We are passive people/ at the end of the day/ we let the outrage melt away/ it seems that life is so much easier that way/ we are passive people/ there's a lot that we can take/ our hearts will dry up before they break"
While her style differs from her dad's, she shares his knack for telling stories, and the young Chapin's compositions linger in your consciousness long after you turn off the disc player.
Linger is out now on Hybrid Recordings.
