Iceland’s Most Colorful Export: Bjork at Deer Lake Park on May 23rd by Michaela Davies The sun was setting over Deer Lake Park when a strange wailing noise pierced the spring air; this noise sent hundreds of pom-pom wearing, pigtailed, hippie creatures scrambling to the front of a large stage. Then a procession of neon-garbage-bag wearing trumpet players paraded across the stage. With their horns blaring and flags waving, the bass section led the queen of all that is high pitched to her adoring fans. The noble creature appeared on stage and launched into her first song on the evening, fittingly called “Earth Intruders,” for most of the people in attendance looked like aliens. Who else but Bjork could appear on stage looking like a rainbow vomited on her and still look like the coolest thing on the planet? Bjork wore a multicolored headdress, a silver mini dress and Technicolor stockings. Surprisingly her outfit choice was rather demure considering the attire of some of the concert-goers. One of the best parts of the show was Bjork’s fans; some of them looked as though they got lost coming back the 90’s rave era, but some were just so wonderfully magical looking I kind of wanted to run up, hug them, and ask for a wish. Deer lake Park is probably the best venue that Bjork could hold her concert. The Monet like forest and lake backdrop was such an amazing juxtaposition with the fantastical stage display occurring. Green lasers shot through the air, red flames throwers went off, L.C.D screens displayed a close-up view of the DJ’s hands, and the brass section moved in their wonderfully weird costumes like one giant, multicolored sea urchin. It was pretty surreal that all this was happening in a forest enclave, albeit a forest with a beer garden and a mini donut factory. Bjork played all the crowd favorites, “Army of Me,” “Wanderlust,” and the dance-frenzy inciting “Alarm Call.” The songs sound even better live, Bjork’s voice was unfailing and steady through the whole set. Unfortunately, the show ended early at 9:45 after only one encore when crowd could have easily kept up their intensity level for a few more tracks. Overall it was probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Bjork may look like an Ewok, but she has the stage presence of a giant and the voice to back it up.
