Weakerthans Come In Strong Off The Prairie

This band rocks.
The Weakerthans, storming west from Winnipeg, Manitoba, proved last week at the Starfish Room that they belong at the forefront of Canadian music - and should be arriving there anytime soon.
Their songs have structure, melody and hook - effortlessly stitching a straight up pop punk rock riff into a mournful lap steel solo without a hitch. It's enough to force the question: What is it about the prairies that seems to be sprouting the best musicians in the country?
Out promoting their second album, 'Left and Leaving', the band has clearly forged ahead and turned out a disc that carries broad appeal.
John Samson's lyrics conjure up the imagery of Winnipeg's decayed urban centers and the isolation and disillusionment stemming from it's inability to preserve, not just the architecture but the people who live there. Powerful stuff, right from the core.
The Weakerthans bring to mind, The Muffs and Wide Mouth Mason (Wide Mouth Muffs ?) Watch for these guys, they have just enough of a radio-friendly sound to burst onto the charts anytime.
