Supersuckers Performance A Lesson In Faith Healing
Vancouver
August 19, 2000
At a recent outing to Starbucks, followed by dinner in Yaletown and drinks at Barnone, a dinner companion was driven to remark "You know what Vancouver needs? A shot in the arm of punk rock. A double dose, screw it, an overdose, of punk f#$*in' rock". Amen.
Saturday’s Supersucker show at the Brickyard filled the prescription with a brilliant, high energy, rock’n’roll extravaganza, proving that although it may not visit often, the spirit of punk is still welcome in Lotusland.
The Seattle four-piece, who now make their home in Tucson, Arizona, delivered a set which could have lured even the most reserved spritzer sipping, SUV driver into a mild mannered pogo. It was an evening of sweaty, dirty, bad-ass rock and roll, produced by men who bring to mind the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in Wayne’s World.
Singer/ guitarist Eddie Spaghetti and his companions showed no modesty in their endeavors at the Brickyard, showcasing their considerable skills on guitar like faith healers from hell.
During 'I Say Fuck' and 'On The Couch', Spaghetti, with guitarists Dan 'Thunder' Bolton and Ron Heathman struck ludicrous syncronized poses, with the singer constantly inquiring "Do you like the rock'n'roll show?". Yes we do.
The best part of the show was not watching the band drip buckets of sweat, or listening to Spaghetti warn the crowd to never pay more than $12 for a pair of sunglasses. No, the best was saved for last, when each member took a turn on Spaghetti’s bass, while still playing their own instrument. Including the drummer.
It is just this kind of crazy, go big or go home mentality that makes the Supersuckers so exciting. So filled with punk rock spirit was this reviewer, the normal post-show double-tall-non-fat-latte was forgone completely. Anarchy then a 10K, baby.
