Fireball Freakout Delivers The Goods, Again
Vancouver
August 23, 2000
The Piccadilly Pub, Aug 17 - 19
This years Fireball Freakout was a blistering success with line ups featuring local bands and touring acts from the US and UK. The annual three day festival has a well earned reputation for uncovering some of the best garage music out there, and this year they delivered once again.
The Spitfires and The Yoyo's were the highlights for me. The Yo Yo's, from the UK, came out the gate ready to go and absolutely ripped. The band served up lashings of tasty punk rock with a rockin, twist. The Status powered through their set and The Black Halos were on. As usual Billy was up front and in your face.
Unfortunately, due to Canada Customs, Bantam Rooster didn't make their show slated for Saturday night but the line-up worked on it's own momentum anyway.
The Vultures and Poison Hearts also put on fine performances, but The Load Levellers from just south of the border were outstanding. Overall it was a sizzling three days of Rock and Roll, liberating and unadulterated.
So long Freakout - until next year.
Dear Diary:
The Picadilly Pub , 11pm:
So tired, so very tired. After a full day's work, three hours of ska at the Croatian Cultural Centre, and only one cup of coffee, I want to go home in the worst way. My eyes are watering with fatigue, my hair standing straight up. Give me sleep or give me a beer. We arrive at the Pic during Les Tabarnacles' set. It is straight-forward, mean, rockabilly. The kind of music I should be drinking to. I resist. I am so tired.
Still the Pic, 11:45pm:
The Vultures, out of Seattle, are just taking the stage. I have been told that closing time is midnight, and feel betrayed that it is in fact, 1am. Sleep. Bed. The Vultures, are, however, pretty damn good and seem hell bent on keeping me on my feet. The singer caterwauls over discordant three-chord rock, while a decidedly out-of-place looking drummer gives his kit the beating of a lifetime. The Vultures , made up of members off The Mullens, The Statics and The Fells, also in Seattle, almost make me forget how tired I am. I have only looked at the clock twice since they started.
West Pender Street, Sometime between 12:30am and 1am:
I am being taken home against my will. I could go forever! Give me more Spitfires! These beer- spraying, hard-rocking Vancouverites have kicked my ass. I'm not tired, I'm not going to bed, I'm going to find a 24 hour record store, buy their new album, "In Too Deep Again" and play it so loud that my neighbours thump on the walls. Viva Les Spitfires, a band who saved my evening, a band who could possibly save Vancouver's music scene.
