Murder City Devils A Major Presence On The Venerable Brickyard Stage

A big Thank You to the Murder City Devils for sticking to the smaller venues in Vancouver.

This weekends's shows at the Brickyard just wouldn't have been the same at the Commodore or anywhere else. Only the Brickyard provides that sleazy je ne sais quoi which is completely in line with what the Devils are trying to do.

The Seattle outfit's two-night stand got off to a shaky-start however when stellar opening act, The Briefs, were kept at bay by our ever vigilant, rubber glove-happy Canada customs agents. While replacements Brecht tried to fill the gap, they failed. Miserably.

There are few things more unpleasant than having an amateur metal outfit scream facile rubbish at you while simultaneously fighting off the advances of a punker with a gen-u-ine handlebar moustache.

However, The Murder City Devils more than made up for their lacklustre openers, pulling off yet another kick-ass Vancouver appearance. With keyboardist Leslie Hardy now pitching in full time, the Devils are sounding more and more like the house band for your local funeral parlour. Twisted, macabre and undoubtably rocking, the Devils manage to be morbid without pretension.

With a trail of alcohol-soaked performances behind them , one would expect the Devils to be more of a spectacle than a band. Memorably, their last show here included a brief intermission to allow the bassist to heave. However, the Devils put in a solid musical effort along with their usual stage torching antics.

Flaming cymbols, clever lyrics and nasty, funhouse, rock'n'roll. All for about $12 at your local dive. The Murder City Devils know how to work it but also know where to work it. Could the Brickyard finally be ready to take the crown once worn by the Mighty Niagara?

Let's hope so.
