Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer Demonstrates Rock's Roots

Bo Diddley at the Commodore
August 31st
Seeing a living legend is always a worthwhile event. Although, the show itself was not legendary, the man himself is. Rock n' Roll music owes a lot to Bo Diddley. He did after all invent the Bo Diddley beat, which has been copied, reworked, and rearranged over and over again since the birth of rock n' roll.
It was good to see rock n' roll fans ranging in age from about 20 to 70 something enjoying a good old rock n' roll show. The 71 year old Bo and his band, The Debbie Hastings Band played a solid set which opened with a 10 minute instrumental of the "Bo beat". I was expecting Bo to break into "Who do You Love" but he only approached the microphone once to tell the audience to "clap your hands". Bo was too busy showing off his stuff to the admirers at the front of the stage. He was in fine form and grooved himself around the stage with confidence, often letting go of his trade mark "box shaped" guitar to boogie down. About half way through his 1 hour and 45 minute set, Bo mixed in a couple of blues songs; a killer version of "I'm a Man" followed by a slower ballad which allowed the band to show off some different dynamics.
Bo seemed to be having a great time as he took a turn on the floor tom accompanying the drummer on a drum solo. He also had a go at the keyboard, as the keyboard player (looking like she was called in off the local Presbyterian church organ) did her best to follow along on the Hammond. Looking around I noticed a lot of smiles on a lot of people's faces that probably don't get out to see a lot of live music. Thank you to Bo Diddley for doing what he does best for over five decades.
