The Whigs / At The Commodore on March 6 th
The Whigs are from Athens Georgia. What is it about Athens, that generates such incredible bands? Unlike Winnipeg , that spawns some of Canada's finest musicians, Winnipeg Manitoba has the cold weather and nothing to do, to blame. I reiterate ...what is it about Athens Georgia ?
The Whigs toured with The Kings of Leon last year as well as Franz Ferdinand and The Drive By Truckers and Tokyo Police.
The band spits out garage rock, revived and regurgitated into a primordial ooze. A gritty and organic matter that hits a chord amongst the hipsters.Their songs have that experimental tinge with a raw and downright gritty background noise. That layers of noise move back and forth with the elasticity of Gumby, creating a caustic and somewhat ethereal lament to their music.
In 2005 the band recorded Give Em All A Fat Lip getting international attention . Shortly after that Whigs were signed to Dave Mathews Label ATO. Subsequently releasing Mission in 2008 and Dark in 2010. We got a full pull Dark of last Saturday night, I'll have to go out and buy it now!
One of their songs is featured on a video game / Pure, 'Need you Need You ' off of Mission Control and they have graced the Letterman and O'Brian stages ...need i say more? I think not.
